Lok Swasthya SEWA Cooperative is an initiative rooted in the 53-year legacy of the SEWA movement, founded by the visionary leader Elaben Bhatt. Lok Swasthya Mandli (LSM) is a women-led health cooperative established in 1990 by the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) to provide affordable healthcare services, provide social protection and create economic opportunities for informal women workers in healthcare. The cooperative emerged from SEWA’s early efforts in linking women to maternal healthcare and government’s public health service’, gradually evolving into a community-based and women-led cooperative. It now has 1536 shareholders, all women and offers an integrated approach to healthcare, social protection more broadly and economic empowerment.

Lok Swasthya SEWA Cooperative is a collective social enterprise in the health sector. It runs a chain of low cost medicine stores and an Ayurvedic, Neutracutical and Health supplements and cosmetic manufacturing unit and Ayuvama Panchkarma centre.
LSM is based on principles of self-help and self-reliance. All activities are organized such that long-term sustainability is ensured financially and decision-making and control by women workers themselves. LSM earns from low cost medicine shops and Ayurvedic unit. It has generated profit. This has been used for its health activities like health education and govt. linkage programme. It has also given dividends every year to its share-holders.
The objective behind starting an Ayurveda manufacturing unit is to provide, quality products at reasonable price and with no side effects to informal women workers, their families and the general public.
LSM began the sale of medicines when SEWA members explained that their hard –earned money was being used for expensive medicines. LSM runs a chain of low cost medicine stores, which make medicine more affordable.
Ayuvama is a Panchakarma and Ayurvedic wellness centre rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda and committed to holistic healing.. Established under the umbrella of Lok Swasthya SEWA Cooperative.
